The widow of the late former Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, Betty Akeredolu, has accused Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of allegedly attempting to exploit her husband’s legacy for personal financial gain.
The state government had announced a memorial lecture scheduled for Friday in Akure, as part of activities marking the first anniversary of Akeredolu’s passing on December 27, 2023. According to the announcement, renowned lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) was to deliver the lecture, with Bashorun Seinde Arogbofa chairing the event under the banner of the Akeredolu Leadership Lecture Series.
However, Betty Akeredolu, in a post on her X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, publicly dissociated herself and her family from the planned event. She accused Governor Aiyedatiwa of excluding the family from the planning process and claimed the event was a veiled attempt to misuse her late husband’s legacy for financial benefit.
In her strongly worded post titled, “Re: Purported Aketi Lecture by Ondo Lucky Can’t Be Serious!”, Betty wrote:
“Which legacy? Lecture, my foot! This is not for Aketi because my family and I are not aware. Damn it! As the saying goes: You and your co-travelers cannot shave Aketi’s head in his absence. You cannot weep more than the bereaved. This insidious propaganda has gone too far!
“Lucky, you are preoccupied with rubbishing Aketi’s legacy; you can’t succeed, anyway. Anybody close to Aketi and me becomes your enemy. Your minions are scared to associate with us for fear of losing their appointments. Now, you want to pretend by organizing one ‘yeye’ lecture for Aketi’s memorial as an excuse to exploit his name. You are on your own! If this is not a #Yahoo #419 lecture, tell me what it is!”
Her post has since sparked widespread reactions, highlighting the growing tensions within the Ondo State political landscape.
