In a pulsating final that will be remembered for years to come, the Super Falcons of Nigeria staged a dramatic comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3–2 and claim a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title on Friday night in Rabat.
The Olympic Stadium was rocking as Morocco stunned the reigning champions with a two-goal lead in the first half, but Nigeria’s grit, experience, and never-say-die spirit ultimately turned the tide in a game filled with goals, drama, and VAR controversy.
Morocco got off to a dream start. Ghizlane Chebbak opened the scoring in the 13th minute, pouncing on a defensive error. Eleven minutes later, Sanaâ Mssoudy doubled the lead with a clinical finish, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and leaving Nigeria shell-shocked.
But halftime brought a complete transformation for the Super Falcons. Head coach Justin Madugu’s pep talk seemed to ignite a fire in the team, who came out with renewed urgency and intensity.
In the 64th minute, Esther Okoronkwo calmly converted a penalty to reduce the deficit. Just seven minutes later, Folashade Florence Ijamilusi powered home the equalizer, shifting the momentum firmly in Nigeria’s favor.
Morocco nearly reclaimed the lead in the 84th minute when the referee awarded a penalty, but after a lengthy VAR review, the decision was overturned — much to Nigeria’s relief.
With extra time looming, substitute Jennifer Echegini wrote her name in the history books, netting the winning goal in the 88th minute with a composed, clinical finish that silenced the Moroccan crowd and sealed Nigeria’s victory.
The Falcons endured six tense minutes of stoppage time before the final whistle sparked wild celebrations from players, coaches, and fans. It was a fitting end to a rollercoaster of a final, and a proud moment for African women’s football.
Once again, the Super Falcons proved why they remain the undisputed queens of African football.
