How Politicians Weaponise Poverty to Buy Votes — ADC Chieftain, BASA

….”They Keep You Poor to Buy Your Vote” — BASA Tells Nigerians

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State and former governorship candidate of the National Interest Party (NIP), Hon. Bolanle Aminat Sarumi, popularly known as BASA, has cautioned Nigerians against money-bag politics, describing it as a deliberate weaponisation of poverty by desperate politicians.

BASA made this assertion while featuring on Channels Television’s political programme, INSIDE SOURCES, aired on Sunday and anchored by Mr. Olaolu.

According to her, some politicians intentionally sustain poverty among the masses in order to exploit their vulnerability during elections through vote-buying and inducement.

“What we are seeing today is the weaponisation of poverty. Politicians deliberately keep people poor so they can easily buy their votes during elections,” BASA said.

She urged Nigerians to resist the temptation of trading their votes for money, noting that such practices undermine democracy and perpetuate poor leadership.

The ADC chieftain also called on the political elite, professionals, and enlightened citizens to take active roles in politics ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that credible leadership can only emerge when responsible individuals engage early in the political process.

The right people must engage in politics early if we truly desire credible leadership. Politics should not be left in the hands of moneybags alone,” she stated.

BASA further encouraged Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and be prepared to vote, describing civic participation as a critical tool for national transformation.

She also reiterated her long-standing advocacy for women inclusion, calling for greater participation of women in party primaries and leadership positions.

Women must not just be mobilisers during elections; they must be given fair opportunities to contest and lead,” she added.

Concluding, BASA urged citizens to be politically conscious and actively involved in shaping the country’s future.

Everyone should be wise, vigilant, and involved in politics. Our collective participation is the only way to rescue our democracy,” she said.
