Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President, has said he was compelled to go into exile to evade multiple assassination attempts.
Atiku recounted his experience during the book launch of loyalist begets loyalist” written by the National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi
He lamented that he has suffered for loyalty, adding that this is the price many Nigerian politicians have paid.
‘’Many of us here, particularly Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, Abdullahi, and myself, have suffered because of loyalty. I have personally faced exile as a result of loyalty.
“I have survived assassination attempts as a result of loyalty. So, Bolaji, what you may have found through research is not unusual; it is part of the price many of us have paid,’’ Atiku said.
Speaking further, the former vice president warned that loyalty requires accountability, transparency and also the ability to listen and learn.
He said, ‘’Loyalty should strengthen the common goal, not narrow the circle of belonging. It requires accountability, transparency, and the ability to listen and learn, especially from those with whom we disagree.
