PRESS STATEMENT
Hon. Bolanle Aminat Sarumi-Aliyu (BASA) Mourns WAEC Student Killed by Police in Ibadan, Calls for Swift Justice
It is with a heavy heart that I, Hon. Bolanle Aminat Sarumi-Aliyu (BASA), express my deepest condolences over the senseless and tragic killing of a young student on his way to write his WAEC examination in Alakia, Ibadan.
According to eyewitness reports, the student was shot by a police officer who was allegedly pursuing a vehicle. This reckless and avoidable act has cut short the life of a promising child whose only crime was seeking education and a better future.
As a mother, leader, and advocate for youth development, I am devastated by this tragic loss. No parent should ever experience the pain of losing a child in such a cruel and unjust manner. I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family and pray that God grants them strength, comfort, and healing in this unimaginably difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.
This incident is yet another painful reminder of the urgent need for reform, accountability, and retraining within our law enforcement agencies. It is unacceptable that those tasked with protecting lives continue to endanger innocent citizens through negligence and abuse of power.
I hereby call on the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State and all relevant authorities to immediately identify, arrest, and prosecute the officer responsible. There must be no cover-up, no delay, and no denial of justice. The life of this young student must not be lost in vain.
Furthermore, I urge the government to prioritize the safety of our students and implement clear policies to ensure law enforcement officers are held to the highest standards of professionalism, restraint, and human rights.
Let us all, as a society, rise and say never again to such tragedies. The future of our children must be protected at all costs.
Signed,
Hon. Bolanle Aminat Sarumi-Aliyu (BASA)
