History Beckons: BASA and the Power of Female Leadership in Oyo State

Hon. Bolanle Aminat Sarumi, fondly called BASA, has consistently raised her voice for female inclusion in governance, rightly arguing that societies thrive better when women are given equal opportunities to lead. Now, as she sets her sights on the Oyo State Governorship in 2027, BASA is not just making a personal declaration — she is championing a generational cause for women across Nigeria who have long been sidelined in political leadership.

History has proven that when women lead, nations and states experience profound transformation. Margaret Thatcher, the “Iron Lady” of the United Kingdom, reshaped Britain’s economy and stood firm in global politics. Angela Merkel of Germany provided stability and visionary leadership for over 16 years, becoming the face of resilience in Europe. In Africa, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf broke barriers as the first elected female president on the continent, restoring peace and credibility to Liberia after years of conflict. Nigeria too has seen the impact of women in governance — from Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who championed economic reforms and today leads the World Trade Organization, to Dora Akunyili, whose fearless war against counterfeit drugs saved countless lives.

These trailblazers prove beyond doubt that female leadership is not symbolic, it is transformational. Oyo State, with its vibrant history and political consciousness, stands at the threshold of making history by embracing BASA’s vision. Her governorship ambition represents more than a political contest — it is a clarion call to all who believe in good governance, inclusivity, and sustainable progress.

BASA’s brand of politics is rooted in accessibility, grassroots connection, and a proven passion for the people. If entrusted with the mantle of leadership in 2027, Oyo State would be positioning itself not only as a beacon of democracy in Nigeria but also as a model for Africa, showing that women can and should lead at the very highest levels.

The question before Oyo citizens is simple: will we allow history to pass us by, or will we boldly open the door to a new chapter where competence, compassion, and inclusivity drive governance? BASA has declared her readiness — the people now hold the pen to write this historic chapter in 2027.
