“He Works for Tinubu, Not Our Party” — APC National Secretary Clarifies Wike’s Status

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has drawn a clear line on the political identity of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

According to Basiru, Wike is not a card-carrying member of the APC, but serves under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu — whose administration he represents in the FCT.

Speaking on Beyond The Headlines, Basiru addressed the growing public debate about Wike’s political alignment and influence, especially following the APC’s strong performance in the recent FCT local government elections.

He attributed the party’s electoral success in the territory to a combination of strategic political engagement, careful candidate selection, and visible governance outcomes — particularly in infrastructure development.

Basiru pointed to what he described as massive infrastructural transformation across the FCT — not only within the city centre but extending to satellite towns and suburban communities — as a key factor that strengthened public confidence in the APC-led administration.

In his words, governance performance under the Tinubu administration, with Wike at the helm of the FCT, played a significant role in shaping voter perception and ultimately influencing the election results.

The statement reinforces a crucial distinction: while Wike may not officially belong to the APC, his administrative role under President Tinubu’s government places him within the orbit of APC-led governance — a dynamic that continues to reshape Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

Indeed, the intersection of governance and party politics remains one of the most fascinating dimensions of today’s political climate.
