The Federal Government has announced plans to phase out the traditional Common Entrance Examination used for the transition from primary school to junior secondary school, replacing it with a Continuous Assessment (CA) model.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed this during a media briefing in Lagos, stating that the new system will evaluate pupils based on their academic performance from Primary One through Primary Six. According to him, each pupil’s assessment record will be cumulative and transferable across schools, ensuring consistency in tracking academic progress.
As part of broader reforms, the government will also introduce a Learner Identification Number (LIN) for every child at the primary level. The initiative is aimed at creating a centralized database to monitor students’ academic journeys, improve retention rates, and enhance policy planning within the education sector.

In addition, the minister revealed that plans are underway to revive the National School Feeding Programme. The programme, previously managed by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, will now be overseen by the Federal Ministry of Education to strengthen accountability and boost school enrolment, particularly in public institutions.
