The owner of X formerly known as Twitter, Elon Musk has on Monday, confirmed intentions to implement charges for new users posting on the platform.
Responding to questions regarding the new X’s policy on new accounts, Musk asserted that charging new users is the most effective strategy to combat the proliferation of bots on the platform.
Musk explained, “Unfortunately, a small fee for new user write access is the only way to curb the relentless onslaught of bots.
“Current AI (and troll farms) can pass “are you a bot” with ease. The onslaught of fake accounts also uses up the available namespace, so many good handles are taken as a result.”

Further speaking on the policy, Musk indicated that new users would be granted free posting privileges after a three-month period.
Since October 17, 2023, X initiated a $1 per year charge for new users in New Zealand and the Philippines to enable them gain access to essential features such as tweeting, retweeting, liking posts, and replying to posts.
The platform stated that this measure aims to “mitigate spam, manipulation, and bot activity.”
Earlier on April 4, Elon Musk announced a platform cleanup operation to eradicate bot accounts and trolls, warning of the suspension of legitimate accounts.
Additionally, Musk pledged to identify the individuals responsible and pursue legal action against them.
