As the countdown to the 2027 general elections begins, a strict warning has just landed for political appointees and public servants across Taraba and Edo States: step down now—or risk being disqualified from the race.

In Taraba, the government has instructed all political appointees and public servants planning to participate in the elections to resign immediately, citing the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026. The directive, released over the weekend by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters and Special Duties, stressed that any public office holder seeking elective office must step down within the legally prescribed timeframe before participating in party primaries or any stage of the electoral process.

Meanwhile, Edo State Governor Okpebholo on Monday issued a similar order, directing all public servants, political appointees, and government officials intending to contest in the elections to relinquish their positions on or before March 1, 2026. The announcement, signed by Secretary to the State Government Umar Musa Ikhilor, emphasized compliance with the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026 and warned that anyone failing to resign before party primaries or other electoral processes risks disqualification.
Both state governments explained that the directives aim to ensure fairness, transparency, and a level playing field, while safeguarding the neutrality and integrity of public institutions. Ministries, Departments, and Agencies have been instructed to widely circulate the notice to guarantee full compliance.
