The House of Representatives on Tuesday received official notices of defection from two lawmakers, marking their departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP).
The lawmakers—Peter Akpanke of Cross River State and Paul Nnamchi of Enugu State—submitted separate letters announcing their exit from their respective parties due to unresolved internal crises.
Akpanke, who represents Obanliku/Obudu/Bekwara Federal Constituency, cited persistent instability within the PDP as the key reason for his defection. He noted that the prolonged crisis had made it increasingly difficult to continue under the party’s banner.
Similarly, Nnamchi, representing Enugu East/Isi Uzo Federal Constituency, pointed to internal leadership issues within the Labour Party as his reason for leaving, stating that the ongoing discord continues to undermine the party’s structure and effectiveness.
Both lawmakers expressed gratitude to their former parties for the platforms that facilitated their election into office.
Their defection letters were formally read on the floor during Tuesday’s plenary session by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas.
Akpanke and Nnamchi have now officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party at the federal level.
