Could Amotekun Be Nigeria’s Grassroots Security Breakthrough? What Oyo Residents Are Saying

The Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun Corps, has become a game-changer in Oyo State’s fight against crime and insecurity. Since its launch, the Corps has significantly improved the safety of lives and properties, earning widespread praise from residents and community leaders across the state.

Strategically deployed across urban centers and remote communities, Amotekun operatives have successfully reduced crimes such as robbery, street violence, cult clashes, and gang activity. Their operational presence in Ibadan and other local government areas has helped restore law and order where it was once fragile.

One of the most impactful components of the Corps’ work is its Forest Surveillance Unit, which focuses on securing forest areas—particularly in the Oke-Ogun axis. This has drastically curtailed incidents of banditry and kidnapping, making farmlands and rural settlements safer for both locals and travelers.

Under the leadership of Col. Olayinka Olayanju (Rtd), the Amotekun Corps has maintained a strong reputation for professionalism, responsiveness, and coordination with other security agencies and traditional institutions. The Corps is widely regarded as a trusted partner in community policing, working hand-in-hand with local stakeholders to address security threats swiftly and effectively.

Governor Seyi Makinde’s sustained investment in the Corps—ranging from equipment to training and logistical support—has been instrumental to its success. Today, the visible presence of Amotekun patrol vehicles across Oyo State has become a symbol of reassurance for many, sending a clear message that criminal elements are no longer welcome.

In an interview, Mr. Ayoade Olatunji, a resident of Amuloko in Ona-Ara Local Government, recounted how things have changed:
Before Amotekun, we couldn’t sleep peacefully. Robberies, street fights, and gang violence were common. But now, the area is calm. We feel secure.”

Similarly, Alhaji Waheed Arikeusola, a respected community leader in Akinyele Local Government, shared:
Our community used to suffer frequent attacks from hoodlums and criminal trespassers, especially at night. But since Amotekun began operations here, the difference is clear. Their patrol teams are always visible, and their response to distress calls is commendable. People now go about their daily activities without fear.”
