The safe release of 24 schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga in Kebbi State, has sparked intense debate over the government’s approach to tackling insecurity in the country.
According to the Presidency, the Federal Government, through security agencies including the DSS and the military, engaged with the kidnappers and secured the girls’ release without any harm coming to them. “The DSS and the military contacted the kidnappers and told them to release the abducted Eruku victims unharmed, and they did,” Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, stated.
However, Segun Akinlabi, Convener of the Egalitarian Team, has raised sharp concerns over this approach. “What does the APC government mean by ‘we spoke to the kidnappers and they released the Kebbi girls’? So you didn’t arrest them? You didn’t engage them? You negotiated and let them walk—only for them to kidnap again?” Akinlabi asked.

While welcoming the safe return of the girls, Akinlabi criticized what he described as systemic failure in Nigeria’s security architecture. “I appreciate that these innocent girls are released, but who is fooling whom? What is really happening to the security system of our State?” he questioned.
The development advocate further emphasized that foreign assistance cannot replace competent governance. “This situation proves that Nigeria does not need America’s support to end insecurity. The real problem is a government permitting criminality to thrive under its watch,” he concluded, urging the government to prioritize robust security measures to protect citizens and restore public confidence.
