The Nigerian Youth Congress, Oyo State Chapter, is deeply weigh down and troubled by the tragic incident that occurred earlier today in Ibadan, where a young student, on his way to sit for his WAEC examination, was killed by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a police officer pursuing a vehicle. This senseless loss of life has sparked rightful outrage and protests among concerned youths, who carried the student’s remains to the Oyo State Secretariat in a powerful display of grief and demand for justice.
The deceased, a promising young scholar, had his future brutally cut short in the pursuit of education, a fundamental right that should be protected and cherished. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving family, friends, and fellow students in unimaginable pain and grief. We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, the school community, and all affected by this avoidable tragedy.
Dr. OTOPE Extends Condolences Over WAEC Student Killed by Police in Alakia, Demands Justice
The circumstances surrounding the incident are alarming and demand thorough investigation. Allegations suggest that the police officer involved was recklessly discharging firearms while pursuing a vehicle, endangering the lives of innocent civilians, including the young student who lost his life. Such actions are unacceptable and highlight the urgent need for a reformed, disciplined, and humane approach to policing in Nigeria.
We urge the relevant authorities to conduct a swift, transparent, and impartial investigation into this incident. Those found responsible must be held accountable for their actions, and justice must be served to assuage the pain of the victim’s family and the larger community. Furthermore, we call for immediate measures to be put in place to prevent such tragedies from recurring, including enhanced training for police officers on the use of firearms and stricter protocols for engaging suspects in populated areas.
The Nigerian Youth Congress, Oyo State Chapter, remains committed to the safety, dignity, and rights of all Nigerian youths. We stand in solidarity with the family of the deceased and the student community, demanding justice and reforms that will ensure a safer environment for all. We will not rest until justice is served and meaningful change is achieved.
We call on all stakeholders, including government officials, security agencies, and community leaders, to join us in this call for justice and reform. Together, we can work towards creating a society where our youths can pursue their dreams without fear of violence or harm.
Justice must prevail.
