The Senate on Tuesday convened an emergency plenary session to revisit the controversial amendments to the Electoral Act, following widespread public outrage over the removal of provisions allowing real-time electronic transmission of election results.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio is presiding over the emergency sitting.
The session is taking place against the backdrop of sustained protests at the National Assembly complex, with demonstrators demanding the reinstatement of electronic transmission clauses they insist are critical to electoral credibility.

EGALITARIAN VOICE gathered that the extraordinary session comes barely days after the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2026, which has since attracted stiff opposition from civil society organisations, opposition parties, labour unions, professional associations, regional leaders, and youth movements. Critics argue that the amendments undermine transparency and threaten the integrity of future elections.
On Monday, Nigerian youths stormed Abuja under the ‘Occupy National Assembly’ protest movement. The demonstration was led by former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who called on lawmakers to protect the will of the people.

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, joined the protest on Tuesday, as protesters waved placards and chanted solidarity songs, demanding accountability, transparency, and the immediate restoration of electronic transmission of election results.
