Before the Storm: INEC Sounds Alarm Over 2027 Political Activities
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised concerns over premature political campaigns and activities across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that such actions violate provisions of the Electoral Act.
The caution was conveyed by Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
This warning comes amid rising concerns over the circulation of campaign posters and subtle endorsements, including those involving high-profile celebrities purportedly rooting for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Responding to these developments, Oyekanmi clarified that INEC has not yet released the official timetable or schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections, and as such, no political party is permitted to commence campaigns or conduct primaries.
“Open campaigns are allowed only within 150 days before polling day and must end 24 hours before that day,” he stated, referencing Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022.
He added: “Section 95(1) also mandates that candidates and their political parties must adhere strictly to campaign rules and guidelines issued by INEC.”
While acknowledging that citizens have the right to discuss political issues and express opinions, Oyekanmi emphasized that open solicitation of votes or campaign rallies before the official window is unlawful.

He further revealed that this issue was addressed during INEC’s last quarterly consultative meeting with political parties, urging stakeholders to strictly adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act.
