Former Vice President and 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to the lifting of the suspension of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the entire episode as a dangerous drift into dictatorship, Egalitarian Voice reports.
Atiku, in a strongly worded statement, faulted both the suspension and the lifting, insisting that the President lacks constitutional authority to interfere in the mandate of a democratically elected governor and lawmakers.
Quoting Atiku directly, he declared:
“Lifting the suspension of Governor Simi Fubara is nothing to cheer about. The suspension of the Rivers State Governor and the State House of Assembly was unconstitutional when it was done six months ago and is still illegal today. President Tinubu had no power to suspend a democratically elected governor and state lawmakers. The Rivers shenanigans only signpost the dictatorship of the Tinubu administration.”
The former Vice President warned that Nigeria’s democracy is under threat, stressing that the Rivers incident is not an isolated crisis but a deliberate undermining of democratic institutions.
“This is how dictatorship begins — Nigerians must resist Tinubu’s unconstitutional overreach,” he cautioned.
Atiku further sent what he termed an SOS to Nigerians, urging citizens, civil society, and the international community to rise against what he described as “the creeping authoritarianism of the Tinubu administration.”

The Rivers political crisis has lingered for months, pitching Governor Fubara against members of the State House of Assembly. The intervention of the Presidency, many argue, has only deepened the controversy rather than resolve it.
