Atiku Raises Alarm Over Alleged Disinformation Campaign Targeting ADC Momentum Ahead of 2027

Former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over what he described as a coordinated disinformation campaign aimed at weakening his political influence and disrupting the growing momentum within the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Tuesday through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, the former Vice President dismissed circulating reports that he recently held a high-level meeting with national stakeholders of the ADC to discuss political alignments for the next election cycle.

Atiku categorically denied the claims, describing them as false, malicious, and deliberately fabricated to mislead the public and sow discord within the opposition space.

“At no time has the Waziri Adamawa held any such meeting with ADC stakeholders at the national level,” the statement read. “His only recent engagement was with stakeholders in Adamawa State, and any attempt to suggest otherwise is entirely unfounded.”

The clarification comes amid growing speculation about potential realignments within Nigeria’s opposition politics, particularly as political actors begin early positioning ahead of the 2027 elections. Atiku’s camp, however, insists that the narrative being circulated is not only inaccurate but part of a broader strategy to destabilise emerging coalitions.

According to the statement, Atiku emphasised that any significant political engagement or decision involving him would be communicated transparently and through appropriate official channels—not through what he described as “anonymous leaks” or “faceless propaganda.”

He warned that the spread of such unverified information reflects a deeper pattern of coordinated attempts to manipulate public perception and undermine trust within opposition ranks.

“What is unfolding is not idle rumour,” the statement continued. “It is a deliberate and coordinated disinformation campaign designed to create confusion, breed mistrust, and ultimately weaken the rising momentum within the ADC and the broader opposition movement.”

The former vice president’s remarks highlight growing concerns about the role of misinformation in Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly as digital platforms and informal communication channels continue to shape public discourse.

Atiku maintained that the timing of the alleged false reports is not coincidental. Rather, he argued, it is linked to the increasing political relevance of his engagements and the broader conversations around opposition unity.

“Across the political landscape today, conversations, speculations, and alignments are converging,” the statement noted. “And more often than not, they are converging around Atiku Abubakar.”

He suggested that this renewed attention and centrality in political discussions may have unsettled certain interests, prompting attempts to discredit him and derail ongoing political engagements.

For Atiku, the development is both a challenge and a reflection of his enduring influence in Nigerian politics. Having contested multiple presidential elections and remained a consistent figure in opposition politics, he continues to be seen as a key player in any potential coalition aimed at challenging the ruling establishment.

His camp argued that the increasing focus on his political moves has triggered anxiety among what he described as “anti-democratic elements,” who are now resorting to misinformation as a tool to fracture unity within the opposition.

“This growing convergence has triggered panic among those who are uncomfortable with the idea of a strong and united opposition,” the statement said. “Unable to match the momentum through legitimate means, they have resorted to crude propaganda.”

Atiku, however, expressed confidence that such efforts would ultimately fail. He insisted that the resolve of Nigerians seeking political change remains stronger than any attempt to manipulate narratives or create artificial divisions.

“No amount of disinformation will halt this movement,” the statement declared. “The determination of Nigerians far outweighs the fear of those who have failed them.”

He further called on his supporters, members of the ADC, and the general public to remain vigilant and not be swayed by unverified reports or politically motivated misinformation.

According to him, the focus should remain on building credible platforms for national development, strengthening democratic institutions, and fostering unity among like-minded political actors.

The statement also underscores the increasing intensity of political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 elections, even as the current electoral cycle is still ongoing. Analysts note that early positioning, alliance-building, and narrative control are becoming central features of Nigeria’s evolving political environment.

For the ADC, which has been gaining attention as a potential platform for opposition collaboration, the situation presents both an opportunity and a test. While growing interest could strengthen its position, internal cohesion and clarity of purpose will be critical in navigating the challenges posed by misinformation and political rivalry.

Atiku’s intervention, therefore, serves not only as a rebuttal of specific claims but also as a broader warning about the risks of disinformation in shaping political outcomes.

As Nigeria’s political landscape continues to evolve, the battle for public perception is likely to intensify, with information—and misinformation—playing a decisive role.

For now, Atiku Abubakar appears determined to confront the challenge head-on, positioning himself not just as a participant in the unfolding political process, but as a central figure in the conversations that will shape the country’s future.
