Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has made a rare and firm declaration on his political independence, insisting that no individual or political force controls his leadership—except God.
Reflecting on his long and winding political journey, the governor revealed that it took eight years of repeated attempts before he eventually emerged as governor, a journey he described as divinely orchestrated.
Makinde spoke during a Thanksgiving Service marking the 50th anniversary of Oyo State, held at the Cathedral of St. Peter’s, Aremo, Ibadan, as part of the state’s golden jubilee celebrations, Egalitarian Voice reports.
According to the governor, both his emergence in 2019 and the milestones recorded by his administration were made possible only through divine guidance, not political patronage.
“I am not ashamed to say it—I do not have a godfather. I only have God the Father,” Makinde declared.
He explained that while political support is often misconstrued as godfatherism, seeking support does not automatically translate to being controlled.
“Some people are offended because they said I approached them for support during the election. Yes, you can seek support from people, but does that automatically make them your godfather?” he asked.
Makinde noted that his government has laid strong foundations for the future development of Oyo State, stressing that leadership must be guided by purpose, not personal allegiance.
The thanksgiving service formed part of a week-long celebration marking Oyo State’s golden jubilee, which officially commenced on January 26 with an inauguration ceremony at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.
Other activities lined up include religious programmes, cultural displays, award presentations, dinner nights, and a public lecture titled:
“Consolidating the Legacy, Navigating the Present and Reimagining the Future.”

Congratulating residents on witnessing the historic milestone, Makinde expressed optimism for the future.
“I want to congratulate all of us for witnessing Oyo State at 50, and I pray we will witness many more years,” he said.

The governor also hinted at continuity in governance, assuring that his administration has built a system that will outlive his tenure.
“God brings a governor at a particular time to signal a new beginning. As we celebrate this 50th anniversary, we must not return to the past. We must remain focused.
“Our team remains intact. It is only Seyi Makinde that will eventually leave, but the team will continue working for the people. We will keep operating in line with God’s will and purpose for Oyo State,” he concluded.
