Resident Doctors in Oyo Call Off 50 Day Strike After Makinde Steps In

The resident doctors at LAUTECH Teaching  Hospital in Ogbomoso have called off their 50 day strike for now.

They will pause for an initial eight weeks after Oyo State  Governor Seyi Makinde stepped in to help settle the dispute.

The Association of Resident Doctors thanked the governor in a letter signed on Friday by its President, Dr Mustapha Adedapo, its PRO, Dr Abdulrahman Fofie, and its Assistant General Secretary, Dr Oladayo Bada.

The letter was sent to the Chief of Staff to the governor.

The doctors said Makinde visited the hospital and chaired a stakeholders meeting on October 15, 2026.

Government officials, hospital board members and leaders of the State House of Assembly also attended.

At the meeting, the doctors raised their main demands.

These included the Medical Residency Training Act, payment of the 2025 minimum wage arrears, and the use of the revised Professional Allowance Table.

The governor agreed to several things.

The 2025 minimum wage arrears will be paid by mid November 2026.

A committee will be set up to work out how to use the Professional Allowance Table within six weeks.

The Medical Residency Training Bill is expected to be passed by October 28, 2026, and signed into law in the first week of November.

After an emergency meeting on October 16, the association decided to suspend the strike.

All resident doctors are expected back on duty on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

The association said it hopes the promises will be kept on time and that this marks the start of a lasting solution.
