What was meant to remain a private engagement between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has now snowballed into a public war of words over the state of the nation’s economy, insecurity and governance.
The disagreement erupted after the Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, disclosed details of the July 28 closed-door meeting during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, revealing that the bishops confronted President Tinubu with concerns over worsening hardship, insecurity and the health of Nigeria’s democracy.
According to the cardinal, the bishops informed the President that many Nigerians were battling severe economic hardship and rising insecurity, warning that the situation required urgent attention. However, he said President Tinubu disagreed with their assessment, insisting that his administration’s reforms were already producing measurable results.
Onaiyekan explained that the memorandum presented to the President was not the opinion of a few clerics but the official position of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, carefully prepared after extensive consultations and thorough reviews.
He maintained that the bishops had no political agenda, stressing that their responsibility extends beyond spiritual matters to speaking on issues affecting the welfare and well-being of Nigerians.
“The Church cannot remain silent when people are suffering,” the cardinal said, adding that the bishops considered it their moral duty to present what they believed reflected the realities confronting citizens across the country.
He further disclosed that although the bishops expected President Tinubu to defend his administration, they felt compelled to present the situation as experienced by ordinary Nigerians.
Onaiyekan also suggested that some individuals around the President might be presenting an overly optimistic picture of the country, which, according to him, differs from the daily experiences of many citizens.
Presidency Hits Back
The Presidency, however, swiftly dismissed the bishops’ assessment, insisting they do not possess exclusive authority to define Nigeria’s realities.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Temitope Ajayi, faulted Cardinal Onaiyekan for publicly revealing details of what he described as a confidential meeting with the President.
Ajayi argued that the bishops freely expressed their concerns during the meeting and that President Tinubu equally responded with facts and evidence supporting his administration’s position.
According to him, while the bishops acknowledged the impact of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), they largely ignored several other achievements recorded under the Tinubu administration.
The presidential aide maintained that economic reforms were beginning to produce positive outcomes, pointing to improved salary and pension payments in many states despite the hardship still being experienced by Nigerians.
He also rejected claims that President Tinubu was dismissive of the bishops’ concerns, insisting the President merely disagreed with their conclusions based on available evidence and official briefings.
Ajayi further described the bishops’ characterisation of Nigeria as a “bleeding nation” as an incomplete assessment that failed to recognise ongoing improvements in the economy, social welfare and security.
He explained that President Tinubu’s understanding of the country’s security and economic situation is informed by daily intelligence reports, operational security briefings and regular consultations with relevant agencies and stakeholders.
While acknowledging that Nigeria continues to face significant economic and security challenges, Ajayi said the administration had implemented difficult but necessary reforms to prevent a deeper fiscal crisis and place the country on the path to sustainable recovery.
He concluded by affirming that although the Catholic bishops remain respected voices in national discourse, they are not the sole interpreters of public opinion or the true state of the nation.
The public exchange has since ignited fresh debate over Nigeria’s economic direction, security challenges and governance, with both the Presidency and the Catholic bishops standing firmly by their respective positions.
