REVEALED: What Nigerians Should Know as INEC Extends Voter Registration, Introduces Self-Service Registration for First-Time Voters

REVEALED: What Nigerians Should Know as INEC Extends Voter Registration, Introduces Self-Service Registration for First-Time Voters

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a major update to Nigeria’s Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, giving eligible citizens more time to register while unveiling a new technology-driven self-service registration platform for first-time voters.

The announcement, contained in a press statement issued by the Commission on Friday and signed by its National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Mohammed Kudu Haruna, revealed that the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration exercise, initially scheduled to end on July 10, 2026, has now been extended by two weeks and will close on Friday, July 24, 2026.

According to INEC, the extension followed a comprehensive review of the ongoing registration exercise and consultations with its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations, and other critical stakeholders. The Commission explained that the decision was taken to ensure that more eligible Nigerians who are yet to register have a fair opportunity to be captured in the National Register of Voters ahead of future elections.

Introduction of Self-Service Registration

In what is considered a significant technological advancement, INEC also announced the launch of a self-service online voter registration platform for eligible first-time voters. The new system will officially become operational on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, through the Commission’s dedicated Continuous Voter Registration portal.

Under the new arrangement, eligible Nigerians can initiate and complete their voter registration process—including biometric capture—using their personal devices without physically visiting any INEC office. The Commission noted that the platform is equipped with advanced identity verification, biometric validation, and backend integrity checks to safeguard the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.

What This Means for Nigerians

The extension means eligible citizens now have until July 24, 2026, to complete their voter registration. Meanwhile, first-time voters can take advantage of the new self-service option beginning July 8, making the registration process more convenient and accessible than ever before.

INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a credible, inclusive, and technology-driven voter registration exercise, urging all eligible Nigerians who have not yet registered to seize the opportunity before the new deadline expires.

Egalitarian Voice reports that the latest development is expected to significantly increase voter participation while reducing congestion at physical registration centres as Nigeria continues preparations for future electoral activities.
