Nigeria’s Heat Wave: Experts Recommend Foods That Help the Body Stay Cool and Hydrated

Nigeria is currently experiencing intense heat conditions, with temperatures rising significantly across several states. Reports from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) indicate that many parts of the country record temperatures exceeding 40°C during the peak of the dry season, particularly between February and May.

Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to such extreme temperatures can increase the risk of dehydration, fatigue, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related illnesses if proper precautions are not taken.

Egalitarian Voice reports that beyond staying in cool environments and reducing exposure to direct sunlight, medical professionals and nutritionists are increasingly highlighting the importance of diet in helping the body cope with high temperatures. Certain foods naturally support hydration, replenish lost minerals, and help regulate body temperature.

Water-Rich Fruits Help Maintain Hydration

Nutrition specialists recommend consuming fruits with high water content, as they help replenish fluids lost through sweating while supplying important vitamins and antioxidants.

Some of the most recommended fruits include:

Watermelon: With more than 90 percent water content, watermelon is considered one of the most refreshing fruits during hot weather. It also provides vitamins A and C, which support immune function.

Pineapple: Rich in water and antioxidants, pineapple aids digestion and helps keep the body refreshed.

Oranges: These citrus fruits contain vitamin C and natural electrolytes that assist in maintaining proper hydration.

Papaya (Pawpaw): Papaya contains water, fiber, and essential nutrients that support digestion and overall body health.

Coconut Water: Often described as a natural electrolyte drink, coconut water helps replace fluids and minerals lost through sweating.

Vegetables That Help Reduce Body Heat

Vegetables are also essential during hot weather because they are generally light, hydrating, and nutrient-rich.

Recommended vegetables include:

  • Cucumber: Known for its cooling properties, cucumber contains a high amount of water and helps regulate body temperature.
  • Lettuce: This leafy vegetable provides hydration and important nutrients that support the body’s metabolic processes.
  • Tomatoes: Rich in antioxidants and potassium, tomatoes help replenish nutrients lost due to heat exposure.
  • Green leafy vegetables: Vegetables such as spinach and ugwu (fluted pumpkin) contain vitamins and minerals that support overall body health.

Light Meals Are Better During Extreme Heat

Health professionals also advise Nigerians to avoid heavy, oily, or overly spicy foods during periods of intense heat, as these can make the body feel warmer and place extra stress on digestion.

Instead, individuals are encouraged to consume lighter meals such as salads, steamed vegetables, beans, grilled fish, and whole grains. These foods provide energy without overburdening the digestive system.

Drink More Water and Natural Fluids

In addition to eating hydrating foods, experts stress the importance of drinking enough water throughout the day. Adults are advised to drink water regularly even before feeling thirsty.

Natural drinks such as fresh fruit juices, coconut water, and zobo with minimal sugar can also help maintain hydration. However, excessive consumption of alcohol, caffeinated beverages, and sugary soft drinks should be reduced, as they may contribute to dehydration.

Additional Safety Tips During Heat Waves

Health authorities further recommend practical steps to reduce the effects of extreme heat, including:

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Wear light, breathable clothing.
  • Rest in well-ventilated or shaded areas whenever possible.
