Presidency Gives Fresh Directive on El-Rufai Over NSA Wire-Tapping Allegation

Presidency Gives Fresh Directive on El-Rufai Over NSA Wire-Tapping Allegation

The Presidency has called for an immediate and thorough investigation into explosive comments made by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over the alleged wire-tapping of the National Security Adviser’s (NSA) phone line.

El-Rufai, during an interview on Arise TV, claimed that he and others had listened to telephone conversations of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, after an individual allegedly tapped the NSA’s phone.

While acknowledging that the act was illegal, El-Rufai defended the development, saying:

“The government does it all the time. They listen to our calls without a court order. But someone tapped his phone and told us that he gave the order.”

His remarks have triggered serious concerns at the highest levels of government.

Reacting on Friday, Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga described the allegation as a grave national security issue that cannot be ignored.

“El-Rufai has confessed to wire-tapping Nigeria’s NSA on TV. Does it mean that he and his collaborators have wire-tapping facilities?” Onanuga queried.

He stressed that the matter must be treated with utmost urgency, warning that no individual is above the law.

“This should be thoroughly investigated and punishment meted out. El-Rufai is not too big to face the wrath of the law,” the presidential spokesperson stated.

The development has sparked fresh debate over surveillance, legality, and the broader implications for Nigeria’s national security framework.
