Voters’ register: How to check your status online in 2026

Voters’ register: How to check your status online in 2026

As Nigerians in states like Ekiti and Osun gear up for off-cycle elections, ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), through the Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Victoria Eta-Messi, in a statement issued in December 2025, announced the conclusion of the first quarter of its nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, paving the way for the public review of the voter register.

INEC urged all registrants, especially those who updated or transferred their voter information, to use the review period to verify their details and file any objections as needed.

According to INEC, a total of 9,891,801 online pre-registrations were recorded nationwide by the end of the 13th week of the exercise.

Why does checking your status early even matter? Anyway, we want to help you avoid showing up at a polling unit only to be told, ‘your name is not registered’. Nigerian elections don’t forgive last-minute surprises.

So, as the 2026 off-cycle and 2027 general polls approach, one simple task can save you from stress and wasted time: knowing how to check your voters’ status online.

INEC updates and reviews the register regularly, especially ahead of major elections. That is why confirming your details early is not being paranoid.

In this article, Tribune Online highlights how to check your voter registration status online.

How to check your voters’ status online in Nigeria

INEC provides an official online portal where registered voters can confirm their status. To access the online portal and check your voter registration status:

Visit INEC’s Voter Verification Portal, or Head to the official INEC voter portal: the same platform used for Continuous Voter Registration and verification.

  • Choose a search option to check your status online.

  • You can search using: Your Voter Identification Number (VIN), or

  • Your name and date of birth. This is helpful if your VIN card is missing.

  • Enter your details carefully

  • A small spelling error can throw everything off.

  • Submit and review your status

Meanwhile, if you are registered, your details, polling unit, registration status, and personal information will appear.

Verify your voters’ status result

When your details pop up, don’t just take a glance and move on; verify everything, whether it is correct or not. Look properly.

But if you have the wrong polling unit, you need to request a transfer.

Also, for name errors, correction is required.

INEC allows voters to correct or update their information during designated periods. Miss that window, and you might be stuck till after the election. It is very important as a voter not to ignore minor errors, because small issues often become big problems on Election Day.

Sometimes the portal or your network can delay access. That is not news anymore in Nigeria, especially during peak periods. So try again later. And if your details still did not come up, visit the nearest INEC office or an approved registration centre. Go with any registration slip or ID you have.

INEC usually publishes timelines for voter register review and corrections, and these updates are often reported by trusted media outlets. Keeping an eye on such reports can help you stay ahead of sudden cut-off dates.

This simple check protects your right

Voting is not just a civic duty, but leverage. And leverage can only work if your name is on the list. Knowing how to check your voters’ status early puts you back in control.

As Nigeria continues to modernise its electoral process, digital verification is no longer optional but essential. And with all the noise in our politics, the least we can do is make sure our own details are correct.
