Court Dismisses Wasiu Ayinde’s Bid to Stop Awujale Selection Process

An Ogun State High Court sitting in Ijebu-Ode has dismissed an application filed by Fuji music legend, Otunba Wasiu Olasunkanmi Ayinde, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate or KWAM 1, seeking to halt the ongoing selection process of the next Awujale of Ijebuland.

The ruling was delivered on Monday by Justice A. A. Omoniyi, who held that the application lacked merit and consequently refused to grant an interim injunction stopping the installation process.

K1 De Ultimate, who hails from the Fidipote Ruling House, had approached the court to challenge the decision of the committee overseeing the Awujale succession, questioning why only the Fusengbuwa Ruling House was being considered to produce the next Awujale.

In the suit, the Fuji musician named Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and the Chairman of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, Otunba Lateef Owoyemi, as defendants. He sought an order restraining them from proceeding with the selection process pending the determination of his substantive lawsuit.

Other respondents in the suit, marked HC3/238/2025, include the Executive Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the Secretary to the Ijebu-Ode Local Government, and the Chairman of the Awujale Interregnum Administrative Council.

Despite refusing the injunction, the court ordered an accelerated hearing of the case, fixing January 14, 2026, for the commencement of full proceedings.

Ayinde’s suit alleges that the Awujale succession process contravenes provisions of the Ogun State Chieftaincy Law and violates his constitutional rights.

The ruling clears the way for the continuation of the Awujale selection process, even as the substantive suit remains pending before the court.
