Ember Months: FRSC Issues Stern Warning to Motorists Against Night Travel and Drunk Driving

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a stern warning to motorists as Nigeria enters the ember months, urging drivers to avoid night journeys, drunk-driving, speeding, and other dangerous road practices.

The caution came from Commander Nasir Mohammed, FRSC Unit Commander for Sagamu-Ore-Benin Expressway, during a media briefing with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). According to him, the festive period often records a spike in road crashes due to reckless driving and negligence.

“Speed is sweet, but it kills faster than any deadly disease,” Mohammed warned, advising motorists to obey traffic rules, maintain safe speeds, and drive responsibly throughout the period

The ember months—September to December—are typically characterized by increased travel as Nigerians prepare for the end-of-year festivities. This often leads to congestion on highways and higher accident rates, prompting the FRSC to intensify road safety campaigns and patrols.

Key Safety Tips from FRSC

✔ Avoid night travel to reduce exposure to crashes and criminal activities

✔ Do not drink and drive, as alcohol impairs judgment

✔ Limit speeding and observe road signs

✔ Avoid wrongful overtaking and ensure vehicles are roadworthy

Commander Mohammed assured that the FRSC will increase patrol visibility, enforce traffic regulations, and sustain its public enlightenment programs to ensure safer roads during the season.

The FRSC’s campaign is part of a broader effort to reduce road traffic accidents and fatalities in Nigeria during the busy ember months. Motorists are encouraged to prioritize safety over speed to safeguard lives and property.
