The Oyo State Government has taken a significant step towards advancing sustainable urban development by securing strategic support from the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Nairobi, Kenya.
The announcement was made during the official visit of the Oyo State delegation, led by His Excellency Engr Seyi Makinde FNSE to the UN-Habitat headquarters towards the newly established authority, led by distinguished Mrs Mofoluke Adebiyi, seasoned scholar, Oyo State New Towns and Cities Development Authority (OYNTCDA) reform and policy advancement process. The collaboration will focus on providing technical assistance, policy guidance, Urban regeneration, new city initiative and global best practices in urban planning, land use management, and sustainable city growth.
Speaking on the development, the E.A to Gov. Makinde on Oyo State New Towns and Cities Development Authority (OYNTCDA) Mrs Mofoluke, noted that the engagement with UN-Habitat will enhance Oyo State’s capacity to design and implement people-centered urbanization policies that balance growth, environmental sustainability, and economic opportunities.
“Our discussions with UN-Habitat in Nairobi have opened the door to long-term collaboration that will help Oyo State align with international standards in urban planning while addressing our unique local needs,” Mofoluke explained. “This is about building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable communities for the smart future.”
The partnership is expected to influence policy reforms that will strengthen urban governance, improve housing strategies, boost infrastructure development, and promote climate-smart solutions in Oyo State’s urban and peri-urban areas.
Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration has continued to push for transformative urban development policies, ensuring that the state remains a leader in sustainable governance models across Nigeria.
