Founder of Salvation Ministries, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, has stirred controversy with a recent sermon in which he claimed that Jesus Christ disapproves of poverty and deliberately avoided close association with the poor during His time on earth.
In a video that went viral on Sunday, Ibiyeomie told his congregation that a review of the Bible shows Jesus never entered the home of a poor person, a detail he interprets as divine disdain for poverty.
“Jesus never visited any poor person in his house, check your Bible,” he said. “That means he hates poverty. He visited Lazarus — they were not poor, they were giving him food. He visited a sinner, Zacchaeus, who was rich. Tell me one poor man Jesus entered his house.”
The cleric emphasized that Christ’s mission was not only to offer salvation but also to deliver believers from poverty. According to him, remaining in poverty after encountering Christ reflects a lack of spiritual insight.
“You can come poor, but you’re not permitted to remain poor,” he continued. “There’s nothing wrong with coming to Christ as a poor man, but it is wrong to remain poor. It is wrong.”
