Nigeria Not Happier Than 104 Countries in the World— Report

A report has presented Nigeria as the 105th happiest country in the world and the 10th happiest in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This was revealed in the World Happiness Report 2025, a publication of the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford in partnership with Gallup, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network and the WHR’s Editorial Board.

The happiness rankings, published on Thursday, are based on life evaluations which are considered the more stable measure of the quality of people’s lives.

Countries are ranked according to their self-assessed life evaluations averaged over the years 2022–2024,” stated the report.

Out of the 147 countries assessed for the publication, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Netherlands, Costa Rica, Norway, Israel, Luxembourg and Mexico were the top 10 happiest.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, 36 countries were evaluated, with Nigeria emerging as the 10th happiest. Mauritius, South Africa, Mozambique, Gabon, Côte d’Ivoire, Congo, Guinea, Namibia and Cameroon occupied the first to ninth positions respectively.

The rankings were based on several parameters, such as social support, GDP per capita, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, perceptions of corruption, as well as positive and negative emotions.

Meanwhile, in 2023, the report ranked Nigeria as the 95th happiest country out of 137 countries based on income, health, social support, freedom to make life choices, generosity and the absence of corruption.

On the bright side, Nigeria is among the top ten countries with high rankings for helping strangers. “People generally want to help others and are likely to choose the best means available,” the report stated.
