The Supreme Court has nullified the local government election conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) on October 5, 2024, citing gross violations of the Electoral Act.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Jamilu Tukur ruled that the election was void due to RSIEC’s failure to comply with electoral guidelines, including its decision to continue voter registration after announcing the election date.

The court held that the flawed process leading to the election breached Section 150 of the Electoral Act, rendering the outcome illegitimate. As a result, all local government chairmen elected in the controversial poll have been sacked.
