In the aftermath of a devastating petrol tanker explosion at Dikko Junction on the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway in Niger State, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed heightened traffic enforcement across the country. The tragedy, which unfolded on January 18, 2025, claimed the lives of over 73 people, left many others injured, and caused extensive damage to shops and properties in the vicinity.
The accident occurred when a truck carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost control and burst into flames, leaving a trail of destruction and grief. In response, the IGP has instructed all State Commissioners of Police to enhance their Motor Traffic Divisions’ operations and enforce strict adherence to safety protocols on highways.
This directive was conveyed in a statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Sunday, January 19. The statement emphasized the importance of road safety and the responsibility of vehicle owners and drivers.
“The IGP further charged vehicle owners and drivers to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and abide by the traffic rules in order to prevent any tragedies,” the statement read.
The IGP also extended his condolences to the families of the victims, praying for the souls of the departed. He called on all stakeholders, including transport operators and the general public, to prioritize safety and responsibility in their daily activities.
“Such ugly incidents must not be allowed to recur,” he urged, highlighting the collective role of all citizens in ensuring safer roads.
The tragedy has sparked nationwide discussions on road safety and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations. The police leadership’s proactive stance reflects its commitment to preventing future occurrences and safeguarding lives on Nigeria’s highways.
