Today, as the world observes Mental Health Day, the Convener of Egalitarian Team, Ambassador (Egalitarian) Segun AKINLABI, a renowned advocate for mental wellness, urges individuals to take ownership of their mental health.
“Mental health is just as vital as physical health,” Segun emphasizes. “It’s time to break the silence and stigma surrounding mental illness and prioritize our well-being.”
Akinlabi’s charge comes at a critical time. Mental health statistics reveal alarming trends as 1 in 4 individuals experience mental illness each year. Depression affects over 300 million people worldwide. Anxiety disorders is affecting almost everyone.

To combat these statistics, Akinlabi proposes five key strategies:
1. PRACTICE SELF-CARE
– Rest and relaxation
– Regular exercise
– Balanced nutrition
– Engage in hobbies and creative pursuits
2. SEEK SUPPORT
– Connect with loved ones and friends
– Consult mental health professionals
– Join support groups
3. CHALLENGE STIGMA
– Share personal experiences
– Educate others on mental health
– Encourage open conversations
4. FOCUS ON POSITIVITY
– Cultivate gratitude
– Practice mindfulness and meditation
– Reframe negative thoughts
5. TAKE BREAKS
– Allow time for relaxation and rejuvenation
– Set boundaries and prioritize tasks
– Engage in stress-reducing activities.
