Veteran Nigerian journalist, Jacob Zango, has passed away in Kaduna State after a brief illness.
Egalitarian Voice reports that the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kaduna State Chapter, in a statement on Friday, signed by its Secretary, Okpani Jacob Onjewu Dickson, disclosed that Zango died on Wednesday.
According to the statement, Kaduna SWAN Chairman, Shehu Abdullahi, expressed grief over Zango’s demise.
It added that Zango passed on when his wealth of experience was greatly needed in SWAN.
SWAN extended condolences to his immediate family, KSMC, the Atyap community, the Kaduna State Government, as well as all the friends and professional colleagues he left behind.
The statement read, “On behalf of all our members and SWAN President, Isaiah Kemje Benjamin, who is also from our state, we express our sadness following the demise of one of our veterans.
“While I was a staff of Kaduna State Media Corporation (KSMC), where he worked until the unfortunate event, we were not just close, but like brothers,” the statement quoted the Kaduna SWAN Chairman.
“We pray that the Almighty God grants his gentle soul eternal rest.”
Two Dead, One Injured As Flood Devastates Bauchi Community
In other news, two people lost their lives and another was seriously injured following a devastating flood triggered by heavy rainfall in Dalmari community, Tarmasuwa, Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, North-East Nigeria.
The village head of Tarmasuwa, Idi Garba, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Thursday night due to a prolonged downpour.
Among the deceased was a 16-year-old boy who was killed when the building he was sleeping in with his brother collapsed.
While his brother was rescued with injuries, an elderly man also lost his life in a separate apartment.
The flood caused significant destruction, demolishing several homes and properties, although the full extent of the damage has yet to be determined.
Garba has appealed to the government and well-off individuals for assistance, as many residents have been left homeless, with their food supplies and valuable belongings destroyed.
