[GOVERNANCE]: ‘Discern and Utilize Constructive Criticism’, MOE Admonishes Nigerian Leaders
As a leader, the driving force behind one’s actions is crucial. Even good actions can be tainted by impure motives, making it essential to be mindful of one’s intentions. Through personal experience, I have gleaned insights from both friendly and oppositional criticism:
1. Criticism from Friends: When friends criticize, their motives are usually pure. Often, they lack complete information and are concerned about the perception of your actions by others. Their criticism, rooted in care, is generally aimed at helping you navigate potential pitfalls.
2. Criticism from the Opposition: Conversely, when the opposition criticizes, their motives are often self-serving. They aim to discredit you while elevating themselves. However, it is vital for a leader not to dismiss their criticism outright. Instead, discerning leaders must sift through such criticism to extract valuable insights that can enhance their governance.
To illustrate this point, consider the scenario of a man that stole bread compare to a man that stole billions of naira and still given same judgment, is that justifiable? No .
But, some people will conclude that why same judgment, if that’s it then the other man should have stolen the billions.”It is better for one man to die than for the whole nation to perish.”
“In other words, not all criticism are supposed to be thrown out through the windows or corridor but to be sieved, so as to separe the wheat from the chaff”. This example underscores how adversarial criticism can unwittingly align with and further a leader’s broader objectives.
A proficient leader can filter criticism, recognizing that even opposition can contribute to their growth and the betterment of their governance.
