Curriculum Overhaul: FG Releases Full Subjects List for Secondary Schools

Introduces Journalism, Programming, Artificial Intelligence, and Research Modules to Prepare Students for the Future

The new curriculum for Nigerian Schools which will commence from the next session in September 2025 has been released.

The Nigerian Federal Government has released the complete list of subjects included in the newly introduced national school curriculum, igniting nationwide discussions on educational reform.

The announcement became public when Dada Olusegun, the Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Social Media, posted the list on his X handle (previously known as Twitter) on Wednesday.

Olusegun shared an image—although not signed or marked—that purportedly lists the approved subjects for both Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) levels.

The curriculum, unveiled on Sunday, introduces new areas of study designed to align with global educational trends and address Nigeria’s socio-economic needs.

Digital literacy and basic entrepreneurship will now be mandatory at the JSS level.

At the senior secondary school level, courses such as programming, artificial intelligence (AI), and new languages will be prominently featured.

Olusegun wrote that the new curriculum for Nigerian schools, set to begin in September 2025 with the upcoming session, has been released.

 

Here is the complete subject outline:

Junior Secondary (Grades 1–3)

Mathematics & Measurement: Numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages; ratios and proportions; rates; geometry involving angles, area, and volume; algebraic concepts; statistics and graphing techniques. Measurement encompasses distance (kilometers, meters, centimeters), weight (grams and kilograms), volume/capacity (milliliters), temperature in Celsius (°C;) ,and understanding time zones.

English Language: Narrative and Descriptive Essay Writing, Advanced Grammar (Clauses and Idioms), Comprehension Skills, Vocabulary Development, Oral Communication (Debates, Speeches, Drama).

Integrated Science encompasses various disciplines, including Physics (covering topics such as motion, forces, and energy), Chemistry (focusing on matter, mixtures, and reactions), Biology (examining cells, reproduction processes, and ecology), Earth Science (exploring climate patterns and resources management), Technology applications in science fields; alongside essential practices like lab safety.

Digital Literacy and Coding: Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet research skills; coding knowledge including Python basics and advanced Scratch; fundamental understanding of robotics using basic kits.

Social Studies: Nigerian and African history, geography, civics, economy (including trade, currency systems, and fundamental entrepreneurship), as well as global issues.

Languages: Proficient in native language, conversational fluency in a foreign language (French/Arabic).

Creative Arts: Illustration, painting, crafts, drama and theatre arts, introductory film studies, music.

Physical and Health Education: Sports, Fitness, Nutrition, Reproductive Health, First Aid, Drug Abuse Awareness.

 

Senior Secondary (SS 1–3)

Mathematics and Advanced Applications: Fundamentals of Algebra, Trigonometry, Basic Calculus, Probability Theory, Statistics, Financial Mathematics, Applied Mathematics.

English and Communication: Advanced essays, academic writing, literary analysis, world literature study, research skills development, public speaking practice; journalism techniques; fact-checking proficiency.

Natural Sciences: – Physics (including mechanics, waves, electricity, and nuclear physics) – Chemistry (covering organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, industrial applications of chemical processes, and analytical techniques) – Biology (encompassing genetics research, ecological studies, and biotechnological advancements) – Environmental Science

Technology and Innovation: programming (Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS), fundamentals of data science, AI and robotics, digital entrepreneurship, cybersecurity.

Social Sciences: Government and Law, Economics (including Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Trade), History (focused on Africa and World Revolutions), Philosophy and Ethics, Entrepreneurship.

Languages: Advanced proficiency in native literature, fluency in an international language (with French, Arabic, or Chinese as optional choices).

Creative Arts and Innovation: Fine Arts, Music, Drama, Film/Media Production.

Physical and Health Education: Advanced Sports, Mental Wellness, First Aid and CPR, Leadership

Research and Project Work: Conducted a final-year project involving data collection, analysis, presentation, and defense.
