2027 Twist: Wike Bows To Pressure, Offers Concessions In Secret PDP Governors’ Meeting
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reportedly reached a consensus with governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to promote unity within the party ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde met with Wike in Lagos last week on behalf of PDP governors. The meeting primarily focused on resolving the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State involving Wike and the suspended Governor Sim Fubara, as well as addressing disputes over the South-South zonal leadership, the party’s National Secretary position, and other contentious matters aimed at balancing internal interests.
It should be noted that the PDP has been grappling with internal discord since the aftermath of the 2023 elections, a situation made worse by the rift between Wike and Fubara and the unresolved leadership issues in the party’s South-South zone.
Efforts by various party organs—the National Working Committee (NWC), Board of Trustees (BoT), National Executive Committee (NEC), and the PDP Governors Forum—to mediate the disputes have only fueled deeper divisions. This prolonged instability has led to widespread dissatisfaction within the party and triggered defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Notably, the defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and several top state officials to the APC has significantly dented the PDP’s credibility and prospects going into 2027.

A source close to Governor Makinde revealed to PUNCH that following the Lagos meeting, Makinde agreed to relay the outcome to other PDP governors, while Wike would do the same with his supporters.
According to the source, “Makinde and Wike had a private meeting in Lagos where Makinde represented the PDP governors and Wike stood for his political camp. Wike voiced his dissatisfaction with the recommendations made by the Governors Forum, arguing they were not in line with party rules and, in some cases, outright illegal. He emphasized that rather than helping, the Forum’s actions had worsened the party’s internal crisis.”
