2027 Presidential Race: Dele Momodu Makes Shocking Revelation About Atiku, Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate and close ally of ex–Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Dele Momodu, has dismissed speculation that Atiku might step aside for former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku, who ran as the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate in 2023, formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in November 2025, months after leaving the PDP. The move was widely seen as a strategy to secure the ADC’s ticket for the 2027 polls.

Last week, Obi, who came third in the 2023 election with over six million votes, also defected from the Labour Party to the ADC. Political analysts interpret Obi’s defection as part of a broader opposition realignment aimed at mounting a strong challenge against President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
While some APC stalwarts, including Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo, speculated that Obi could end up as Atiku’s running mate, key Obi supporters have rejected the idea. Prominent figures such as political economist Pat Utomi and activist Aisha Yesufu have warned they would withdraw support if Obi accepted a vice-presidential slot.

Recent rumours suggested Atiku might step aside for Obi based on an alleged understanding that Obi would serve a single term and hand over to Atiku in 2031. Momodu, however, strongly rejected such claims. In an exclusive interview with PUNCH Online in Abuja, he said, “Several people have asked me to advise former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to voluntarily withdraw from the 2027 presidential race… out of unsubstantiated malice and prejudice.”
Momodu further defended Atiku’s credentials, highlighting his education, business success, philanthropy, and contributions to democracy and the rule of law. “Asking our most experienced and cosmopolitan aspirant to sacrifice his credentials on the altar of raw emotion and primordial sentiments is a monumental tragedy,” he said.
Meanwhile, former lawmaker and activist Shehu Sani cautioned Nigerians not to take politicians’ public statements at face value, noting that declarations of non-withdrawal or refusal to accept a deputy slot can change under the guise of “national interest.”
Despite public denials and political posturing, insiders say Atiku and Obi are engaged in behind-the-scenes discussions aimed at forging a united opposition front ahead of 2027. Both reportedly share the objective of unseating President Tinubu and ending APC dominance, with their defections to the ADC viewed as a potential platform for a broad opposition coalition.

However, with both leaders commanding strong followings and asserting legitimate claims to the presidency, the question of who will step aside remains unresolved. Atiku, Obi, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi are all reportedly positioning to contest the ADC’s presidential ticket, setting the stage for a highly contested primary later this year.
