2027: PDP Turns to Coalition For Help Amid Defections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is considering forming an alliance with other opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, following a wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Top PDP officials told Sunday PUNCH that discussions are ongoing among party leaders to forge a coalition capable of challenging the APC’s dominance.

The move marks a shift from the PDP’s earlier stance. In April and July 2025, both the PDP Governors’ Forum and the South-West caucus rejected coalition talks, insisting on party unity.

However, recent defections have rattled the party. Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Akwa Ibom’s Umo Eno, Enugu’s Peter Mbah, and Bayelsa’s Douye Diri have all dumped the PDP for the APC in recent months, alongside at least 20 National Assembly members.

A senior PDP official said the party could no longer ignore its dwindling influence, especially in the South-East and South-South.

“Defections have weakened our base. To remain relevant, we may need a strategic alliance with credible opposition parties,” the source said.

South-West PDP Chairman Kamorudeen Ajisafe also called for “concerted democratic efforts” to unseat the APC but downplayed the impact of the defections.

“If elections are credible, the defections won’t matter much. Nigerians are tired of the APC,” he said.

Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor described the defections as “shameful” but confirmed that high-level talks were ongoing with other opposition groups.

“We’re open to collaboration with any credible platform committed to ending President Tinubu’s government in 2027,” he said.

Meanwhile, APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru dismissed the PDP’s coalition plan as futile.

“The PDP can’t even organise itself, let alone a coalition. We’re focused on delivering the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.

The PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, did not respond to calls and messages as of press time.
