ONLY GOD GIVES POWER
Those words form the crux of the statement by Hon Bolanle Aminat Sarumi Aliyu, a PDP chieftain in Oyo State, popularly called BASA while addressing pressmen yesterday 3rd October 2024.
Speech to Pressmen: “Only God Gives Power”
Ladies and gentlemen of the press, I appreciate your presence here today. I want to address a matter that is close to my heart as I continue my political journey, one that is rooted in my personal experience and faith. The title of my message is simple: “Only God Gives Power.”
Throughout my life, I have always turned to God in prayer, asking Him to guide my steps and allow me to fulfill my destiny. And time and time again, He has answered. But in moments of delay, when my plans didn’t unfold as quickly as I desired, I questioned God’s timing. I asked why I was being held back. It was only later that I came to realize: God was shielding me from paths that would not have served me well. In His infinite wisdom, He sees what we cannot, and His plans are far greater than ours.
This understanding has been especially clear in my political journey. I have learned that if you look up to man for validation or success, you will often be met with disappointment. No man can make me the Governor of Oyo State. That decision lies solely in the hands of Almighty God. When God says it is time, the very person who once vowed never to support you could either falter in such a way that clears your path, or surprisingly become an instrument of your success, without even realizing how their actions have aligned with God’s plan.
My advice, to everyone listening, is simple: remain humble. Trust in God and be grateful for the efforts of others, but never put your hope solely in man. Never elevate anyone to the level of a “mini-god” in your life, for power and positions are fleeting. Life is like a movie—today, one person may be the star, but tomorrow, someone else will take center stage. How you will be remembered—whether as a light that illuminated the path for others, or one that faded into obscurity—depends on your deeds and how you serve.

So, I stand before you today, not as someone looking for man’s favor, but as someone who knows that only God gives power. When the time is right, He will make it happen, and nothing or no one can stand in the way of His will.
Thank you.
